Obituary
Vivan Simmons Flud, age 96 of Hickory Grove, Arkansas in Newton County died Friday, December 4, 2009 at Newton County Nursing Home in Jasper, Arkansas.
She was born June 27, 1913 at Mira, Louisiana in Bossier Parrish, the daughter of George Washington and Ida Bell (Culbertson) Simmons. At one year of age, she accompanied her parents back to Newton County at Hickory Grove.
She was a school teacher, teaching at Hurricane and later helped manage the ancestral farm at Hickory Grove. She was the fourth generation to live there, where she spent the later years of her life.
She spent eight years of her growing up at Maud and Seminole, Oklahoma, where she completed the tenth grade then finished high school at the Newton County Academy at Parthenon, Arkansas. She finished the extra subject at Deer High School in 1932. Vivan was converted to the Baptist faith at Seminole, Oklahoma in 1927.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents, James Pickney Simmons, Mary Elizabeth (Brown) Simmons, Gus "Bud" Culbertson, and Mary Alexander Beasley Culbertson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Delmer L. Flud.
Survivors are one son, Don H. Flud of Hickory Grove; one daughter, Mary Perry of Nail; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Vivan was Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Coffman Funeral Home in Jasper.
Services were Monday, December 7, 2009 at Nail Church with Bro. Bobby Young officiating. Pallbearers were Alan Davis, Dorlon Brown, Dwain Martin, James Davis, Jerry Williams, and Robert Winnat. Honorary pallbearers were Carroll Ober, Harl Bohannon, and Troy Plumlee.
Burial followed in Hickory Grove Cemetery.
