Vernon E. Smith, of Valley Springs, Arkansas, went home to be with the Lord on his 91 st birthday, Wednesday, September 14, 2022.
He was one of 9 children born to Elbridge and Willie (Snow) Smith, born on September 14, 1931 in Osage, Arkansas. He was a lifelong resident of this area and was raised in the Nazarene Church.
Vernon was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the Cattlemen's Association. He worked hard many years as a plumber and electrician, but his passion was always his farm. He spent countless hours cutting hay and working his cattle. He enjoyed daily conversation at the local coffee shop and spending time sharing stories with his friends.
Vernon was the glue of his family. His family all looked up to him for advice or encouragement. He had a kind heart and gave the best hugs. He was loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers, 3 sisters; and his former wives, Wilma Gibbs Smith and Nadine Villines Smith.
Vernon is survived by his sons, Larry Smith and Harold Smith; daughters, Louise Surber and husband Jim, Janet Heard, Joann Smith, and Charlotte Dunnigan (Claude Ralls); two sisters-in-law, Elvie Smith and Betty Smith; and a legacy of 12 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren, 3 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.
Funeral service will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Coffman Funeral Home in Harrison with Rev. Bill Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation will be held 1 hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 AM.
Pallbearers are Arvin Brisco, Bobby Cooper, Charlie Smith, Claude Ralls, Don Smith, and Jim Surber.
Honorary pallbearers are Jason Cash, Fred Woehl, Gregg Joubert, Jaril "Porkchop" Cross, and Wayne Crunkleton.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Children's Charity Ministry, Arkansas Children's Hospital or St. Jude's.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Bellefonte Harp's Pharmacy Staff, and Dr. Kevin Jackson and staff.
