Obituary

Troy Willie Harmon, age 84, of Valley Springs went peacefully to his eternal home with Jesus on Wednesday, January 31st, 2024 at Harrison. He was surrounded by all of his family. Troy was born July 14th, 1939 in Tilly, Arkansas to Roy and Thelma (Hamblin) Harmon. He graduated from Witts Springs High School in 1958. He professed his faith in Christ in April of 1961 at Witts Springs Community Church, and he was baptized at Salem Baptist Church in Benton, Arkansas in 1968.

Troy married Helen Sue Yancey on November 4, 1961 in Snowball, Arkansas at Snowball Baptist Church. He attended Eaton Barber College in Little Rock, Arkansas, which started his lifelong career as a barber, knife trader, and storyteller. He worked in Russellville and Little Rock before opening Troy's Barber Shop in Harrison in July of 1970. During his time as a barber, he also served as the mayor of Valley Springs from 1973-1990. As mayor, he worked to implement the first water and cable system in Valley Springs as well as naming the streets and paving the roads. He and Helen became members of First Baptist Church of Valley Springs in October of 1971 where he served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher for many years.

He enjoyed working on the farm with his Hereford cattle on the Middle Fork of the Illinois Bayou and trading knives in his barber shop. He enjoyed spending time with Helen, traveling to knife shows and growing an impressive garden together that could be seen from Hwy 65. He loved going squirrel hunting with Cash and helping to care for Kelli's hobby farm. He spent many years cheering on his granddaughters at all of their activities across the state of Arkansas and playing guitar for them on Saturday nights. If he wasn't at home, he could be found swapping stories at any of the local coffee shops around town.

He is survived by his loving wife, Helen, of 62 years; his children, Cash (Apryl) Harmon of Harrison and Kelli (Steve) Lawrence of Harrison; his grandchildren, Kayley (Matthew) Foster of Russellville and Lindsay (Lance) Nordmeyer of Tontitown; his great-granddaughter Alivia Foster of Russellville; and countless other nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents Roy and Thelma Harmon and his sister Veda Jacobs.

Pallbearers will be Cash Harmon, Steve Lawrence, Matthew Foster, Lance Nordmeyer, Eddie Phillips, and Shane Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be men and women's Sunday School class at First Baptist Church of Valley Springs, Carl Wills, Cody Nelson, and Dr. Tom Leslie. Troy's family would also like to thank the nurses and other staff at The Springs of Mt. Vista for their care and kindness over the last month.

Visitation will be from 6:00-8:00 pm on Friday, February 2nd (2024) at Coffman Funeral Home in Harrison. Funeral will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 3rd (2024) at Coffman Funeral Home in Harrison with Brother Sean Milliken officiating. Burial will follow at Dongola Cemetery in Dongola, Arkansas.
