IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Phillip Gregg
Barnes
May 19, 1964 – January 18, 2025
On Saturday, January 18, 2025 Phillip Gregg Barnes went to be with Jesus. His sudden passing has left a huge hole in our hearts.
He was born on May 19, 1964 in Harrison, Arkansas. Gregg was the middle child and natural instigator with a love for adventure. He was a graduate of Omaha High School, Class of '82. He was known for his love of basketball, rodeos, fishing, and hunting. His other passion was chuckwagon races and cars. He's had a plethora of muscle cars, but his favorite was the '72 Chevy Truck and Blazer.
Gregg's lifelong career was as a Merchant Marine on the Eagle I Vessel, and he traveled all over the US. He worked a month on and a month off until he retired. But on his month off he played and played hard. He ran home to get Morgan and off they would go, to the lakes, to the games, or to the woods...
Morgan Ross Barnes was the apple of his eye and his pride and joy. Morgan and Abbi blessed Gregg with 4 grandkids, whom he adored. They could do no wrong. He constantly texted all his friends, sending family photos and updates on all their activities. He was a "Hands On" Papa G.
Gregg was well known for his smack talking. He loved nothing more than to stir the pot and ruffle feathers. He thought that was so funny. He could make his sisters madder than wet hens. He especially loved trash talking while playing basketball.
He loved his momma and treasured her with all his heart. He spent a lot of time taking Dad to basketball games. They went all over Boone, Newton, and Madison County. He was a good son to Ward, Lucy and Bob; father to Morgan and Abbi; and Papa G to Jada, Hugh Walker, Millie, and Hickory.
Gregg grew up in church and accepted Jesus as his Savior. He loved all kinds of music, but especially the old gospel songs. He couldn't carry a tune but what talent he didn't have he made up with enthusiasm. There were a few times a song meant so much to him he sang a solo special at New Hope. His heart was big. We take comfort knowing he is now with Granny Barnes, Bob and Granny Lucy in Heaven. What a Day that will be when my Jesus I shall see… Until we meet in eternity you will be carried in our hearts.
He is survived by his son, Morgan Ross (Abbi) Barnes, grandkids, Jada, Hugh Walker, Millie, & Hickory; his father, Ward Barnes; siblings, Tony (Denise) Barnes, Vesta (RJ) Runyon, Judy (David) Brown, and David (Julie) Barnes; a host of nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many dear friends.
Visitation will be Saturday, January 25 (2025) from Noon until 2 PM, and the funeral service will immediately follow at 2 PM, with both being held at New Hope Baptist Church, 7441 Hwy 14W, in Omaha. Pastor Rick Brisco will officiate. Burial will be at New Hope Cemetery following the service under the direction of Coffman Funeral Home.
Pallbearers are Heath Barnes, David Dunn, Tony Barnes, David Barnes, David Arnold, and Eugene Young.
Honorary pallbearers are Hugh Walker Barnes, Hickory Barnes, Mark Barnes, and Robert Robbins.
