Obituary

Nelda (McEntire) Sasser, of Harrison, passed away at her home on Sunday, June 22, 2025.  She was 93 years old.

Nelda (McEntire) Sasser was born July 19, 1931. She considered herself a lifelong Arkansan, even though she briefly lived in Topeka, Kansas. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and grandmother. She was born to Homer R. McEntire and Mandy L. Baker in Bruno, Arkansas. She attended the Bruno school. She met the love of her life, Jay Sasser in Bruno, Arkansas. They married March 7, 1947, upon his return from the war. They were married sixty-one years. If you asked Nelda, she could tell you how long they were married to the day. She loved telling stories of their courtship and early marriage. After he passed, she often said, "I had the best."

Nelda loved camping, fishing, bluegrass music and working her word search puzzles.  She read her Bible daily and looked forward to attending Sunday school and church services, but her favorite activity of all was caring for the people she loved, and she loved everyone. She would frequently bake, and share her baked goods with any and all. You wouldn't have been a guest in her home for more than a few minutes before you were offered a beverage or something to eat. If you ate everything on your plate it meant you needed more. If you didn't clean your plate, it meant you didn't like it. Her very favorite offering was a Dilly bar, which she purchased in bulk. She was often teased by family over her love of her daily Dilly. In her later years, many days required more than one daily Dilly.

For as long as she was able, she worked outside of the home. She retired early from McKesson to care for her disabled mother. After her mother died, she and Jay were park attendants at Tucker Hollow campgrounds. When Jay became too ill to continue,  she became his caregiver.

Nelda became a member of Eagle Heights Baptist church in 1960. She briefly transferred her membership to Elmdale Baptist church when she and Jay moved to Fayetteville.  After Jay's passing, she returned to Harrison and her home church.

Nelda was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jay, her parents, Homer McEntire and Mandy Harris, an infant daughter, Patricia Rae, and her brother Lonnie.

She is survived by her four daughters, Carolyn Morton, Kaye Wright and her husband Jim, all of Harrison, Debra Carter, Janell Selby and her husband Robert, all of Fayetteville. She is survived by her grandchildren, Cheryl Estes and husband Cody, Scott Wright and wife Michelle, Laura Morton, Jamey Wright and wife Elizabeth, Beth Andreasen and husband Shane, Jason Selby, T.J. Pederson and wife Sara, Leslie Wright, Daniel Carter and wife Emily, and Jenna Crider and husband Jeremiah; one sister, Marie Smithee; and one-half sister, Joan Gieski. She had 26 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

The family asks that every person who knew and loved granny enjoy their next Dilly Bar in her honor. The Heath one was her favorite.
