Obituary

Melvin "Mick" Clarke Daugherty was born on July 21, 1932, to John Melvin and Deborah Belle Daugherty in Dearborn, Michigan and died at his home in Jasper, Arkansas on December 17, 2021.

He was a playwright, poet, actor, theater director, drama instructor, machinist and farmer.  Following high school in Michigan, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served on a battleship in the Pacific during the Korean War.  After the war, he studied theater at UCLA, University of Iowa, and UNC, and he directed the Towngate Theater in Wheeling, West Virginia for several years.  His plays were performed in theaters all around the country, from Los Angeles to New York City, including his play "Honey" which won the National Endowment of Theater Award in 1975.

After discovering Newton County in the "70's, Mick built his own home near Compton and homesteaded his beloved "Hawgfat Holler" for over 40 years, during which time, he composed plays, poetry, memoirs and adventure stories.  He moved to Jasper a few years ago, where he worked at the Christian Food Room, and continued his writing until just before his death.

Mick is survived by his son, Brent of Redondo Beach, California, several grandchildren and many friends.

Cremation under the direction of Coffman Funeral Home of Harrison and Jasper.
