Obituary

Melvin James Cowan, age 60 of St. Joe, Arkansas passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011 at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison, Arkansas.

The son of Laster James and Lelan (Williams) Cowan was born July 31, 1950 in Cherry Valley, Arkansas.

Melvin had lived in California and Washington and was of the Pentecostal faith. He enjoyed the television show "Animal Planet" and also enjoyed collecting antique cars. He loved being an athlete for the Special Olympics where he won 65 medals.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Michael, James Monroe, and Laster Wayne Cowan.

Melvin is survived by his brothers and sisters, Tony Cowan of St. Joe, Elvin Cowan of Rogers, Jerry Cowan and wife Bonnie of Everton, Gary Cowan and wife Nellie of Laredo, Texas, Alvin Cowan and wife Joyce of St. Joe, Carl Cowan and wife Kathy of Pindall, John Cowan and wife Tonya of Bentonville, Geraldine Pulliam and husband James of Yakima, Washington, Veda Brown and husband Sandy of Valley Springs, and Brenda Wyatt and husband Robert of Western Grove.

He was also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Graveside service was Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Rock Creek Cemetery with Donnie Chisum officiating. There was open visitation at Coffman Funeral Home.
