Obituary

Lunie Clay Smith, "Coon", a devout family man, aged 82, of Cowell, Arkansas, woke up in the arms of Jesus on November 11, 2024. Born on April 1, 1942, in Vendor, he was the cherished son of Dave-Vinson and Addie (Martin) Smith.

Lunie grew up in a tight-knit family, attending elementary school in Vendor and high school in Mount Judea. From a young age, he was involved in the family's farming, logging, and sawmill operations, fruit and cotton picking, contributing to the family's livelihood with dedication and hard work.

A man of faith, Lunie was a member of Pine Grove Church on Smith Mountain where he participated actively in the community. His genuine, loving, and gentle nature, coupled with a quick wit and generous spirit, made him a beloved figure in his community. Lunie was also known for a playful ornery streak that brought joy and laughter to those around him.

An avid outdoorsman, Lunie enjoyed the time he spent in nature, whether it was checking on his cows, hunting coon, deer, turkey, squirrel, or fishing. He had a keen interest in foraging for ginseng, poke salad and morel mushrooms, skills that he shared and enjoyed with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Buster and sister-in-law Donna Sue Smith, brother Elmer and sister-in-law Arvella Smith, Zelmer Smith, Darrell Smith, sister-in-law Linda Smith and two infant sisters.

Lunie is survived by his wife, Sarah Ellen Smith; children, Leisa (Todd) Milam, Shawn (Desiree) Smith, and Nathan Smith; eleven grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Luell Smith and Robert (Connie) Smith; sister, Imogene Madewell; sister-in-law, Rilda Smith; several special friends, Roy Clayborn, Clinton Looper, Rusty Martin, Kenny Greene, Elmo Floyd, James Compton, Bob Breedlove, Jerry Humphrey, and all of those that meant so much to him; and many nephews, nieces, and cousins.

Visitation will be held at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM both on Friday, November 15, 2024 at Coffman Funeral Home in Jasper. Pastor James Compton will officiate. A family only committal service will follow at Cowell Cemetery.  Pallbearers are Roy Clayborn, Rusty Martin, Kenny Greene, Kaleb Richardson, Ethan Smith, Beau Smith, and Chase Smith.  Honorary pallbearers include Jimmy Basinger, Bob Breedlove, Clinton Looper, Elmo Floyd, all of his nephews, and Dr. Arnaoutakis and the Staff at UAMS Cancer Treatment Center.

Lunie's life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him, as a testament to his warm spirit and the deep impressions he left on his family and community.
