Johnny Lee Murray, 77, of St. Joe, Arkansas passed away on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at Hospice of the Hills Hospice House surrounded by his family. He was born on January 12, 1949, in Harrison, Arkansas, to Othella “Mike” Murray and Sybil Murray. A proud lifelong resident of Valley Springs and Gilbert, Arkansas, Johnny never strayed far from the hills, rivers, and people he loved most.
A 1967 graduate of Valley Springs High School, Johnny proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps before later serving in the National Guard. Following his military service, he dedicated 43 years of his life to serving others as a social worker. He had a gift for connecting with people, offering a listening ear, a helping hand, and a steady presence to those who needed it most. Johnny was also a respected sports referee for more than 20 years, a role that allowed him to stay involved in the community and the games he loved.
Johnny also had a big love for dogs and always enjoyed their loyal companionship throughout his life.
While Johnny loved his family above all else, the Buffalo River held a special place in his heart. He knew its waters like an old friend, having floated every stretch from Boxley Valley to Buffalo City over the years. Some of his happiest days were spent drifting down the river or gathered with friends on a gravel bar beside a crackling campfire. For Johnny, there was no better way to spend an afternoon than watching the river roll by and enjoying the company of those he loved.
Johnny never met a stranger. He had the most infectious laugh and a way of making everyone around him feel welcome. His smile could light up a room, and he was often the life of the party, always ready with a story, a joke, or a laugh. He embraced life wholeheartedly, making the most of every moment and leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, Othella “Mike” Murray and Sybil Wells; his stepfather, Hugh Wells; his uncle, Silby McDonald; and his beloved wife, Betty Murray.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Heather Simmons, and son-in-law, Clint Simmons. He also leaves behind two granddaughters, Alex Simmons (Clint Harp) and Mackenzie Dixon (Austin Dixon); two great-granddaughters, Ivy Harp and Tinslee Dixon. Johnny is also survived by two nephews, Scott Washam and Steve Popelka; his dear companion, Becky Williams; along with many extended family members and friends who will miss his laughter, stories, and larger-than-life presence.
Whether he was helping others, serving his country, serving in the National Guard, officiating games, spending time with family, sharing stories with friends, or finding peace along the Buffalo River, Johnny lived a life rooted in kindness, friendship, laughter, and a deep appreciation for the simple things that made life good. His family will forever cherish the memories he created, the love he shared, and the joy he brought into their lives. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice of the Hills, 501 E Sherman, Harrison, AR, 72601, or to Gilbert Christian Church, PO Box 32, Gilbert, AR, 72636 in Johnny’s memory.
The family will host a celebration of Johnny's life on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 10:00 AM, at Gilbert Christian Church. ❤️
