Jesse Robert Moffett, age 80, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died surrounded by family in his home on Wolf Springs Road in Harrison, Monday, January 14, 2008.
The son of Theodore Edwin and Theodosia Lane Moffett, was born August 9, 1927, at home in Dilley, TX, the third of seven children. Growing up in south Texas, his love of the Hispanic language, culture, and people, the foundation of his career, took root. At 17 he served in the Navy during World War II, graduated from Texas A&M University in 1948, and then went to Mexico to work with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture. On March 5, 1962, he answered President Kennedy's call and moved his young family to Bogota', Columbia, as Assistant Director of the Peace Corp., consequently serving in Honduras and then Belize as the Director. In 1965 they moved to Panama, where he began his work as Agricultural Development Officer with the Agency for International Development, a branch of the U.S. Dept. of State. He continued this work helping small farmers in Bolivia, El Salvador, and Costa Rica. After over 25 years in Latin America, he retired from the State Dept in 1987 to live on his farm near Lead Hill, moving to his present home on Wolf Springs Road in 1997. His life was dedicated to serving his family, his community, and his country, and he felt strongly that every many can make a difference, and every man should try.
He was loving father and husband, a mentor and an inspiration to his entire extended family. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Carolyn Moffett; his brothers, Ted, Frank, and Cliff Moffett; his sister, Amy and Nancy; his children, Dr. Shirolyn Moffett, Theo Lane Moffett, Jesse Robert Moffett, Jr. and Genie McFarland, all of Harrison; and his eight grandchildren, Genie Allen Gross and Gary Gross, Samuel Moffett Allen and Vanessa Allen, Sara Allen Gibbs, and Joshua Gibbs, Dustin Pitre, Leah Allen, Becca McFarland, Jessie lane Pitre, Amy McFarland, and great granddaughter, May Moffett Allen.
