Ray Mathis, age 94 of Harrison, AR passed away Thursday, Wednesday 5, 2007 at North Arkansas Regional Medical Center in Harrison.
The son of Ollie Homer and Nina Pearl (Beck) Mathis was born August 13, 1913 in Crews, TX.
His parents preceded him in death, along with his wife, Vonnie (Paul) Mathis; a son, Bervin Ray Mathis; a sister, Reba Watkins, and brothers, Rex, Jiggs, Chester, and Russell Dean Mathis.
Survivors are his son, Paul Lynn Mathis and his wife, Linda Sue (Foster) Mathis of Harrison; brothers, Carroll Mathis and his wife, Freda and Frank Mathis and his wife, Janet, also of Harrison; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Mathis of Harrison; grandchildren, Sonya Edwards and her husband, Kris, Lonnie Mathis and his wife, Heather, Jennifer White and her husband, Blaine, James Paul Mathis and his wife, Becky; and great grandchildren, Shelby and Gatlin Edwards, Vail and Levi Mathis, Michael Slay, Sophia Mathis, and two on the way.
He was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Harrison. During the years of 1941 to 1946
he was a conductor for the M & A Railroad and then worked on the A & O Railroad, which was the last railroad to run out of Harrison. He also worked at a downtown Esso gas station and then went to farming and raising cattle. This filled his days with great joy since he loved being outdoors and at home with his wife. He also enjoyed being with his four grandchildren and their families. He was a gentle man who loved his family. He loved to play the harmonica and listen to gospel quartet music, which he sang as a young man in a local quartet.
Visitation 6-8 P.M. Friday, September 7, 2007 at Coffman Funeral Home in Harrison. Graveside service will be 2 P.M. Saturday, September 8, 2007 at Maplewood Cemetery with Rev. Glenn Crenshaw officiating. Pallbearers will be his family. Honorary pallbearers are the Hillcrest Home staff.
