Houston Bailey was born May 28, 1914 in Rutledge, Alabama and died December 25, 2008 in Harrison, Arkansas at the age of 94. He graduated from Luverne High School in Luverne, Alabama and Chilocothe Business College in Missouri. He then entered the U.S. Army, serving in an anti-aircraft artillery unit in the European theater during World War II.
After the war, while visiting his sister in Houma, Louisiana, he met and later married a young widow, Edna Louise Pellegrin Lord. He adopted Edna's two children, Eric S. and Lou Etta Lord. The couple then had another daughter, Gwendolyn in 1954.
Houston earned his teaching certificate from Nicholls State University and at Southeastern State University of Louisiana, and a master's degree in counseling from Louisiana State University. He taught business at Louisiana Vocational and Technical School in Houma and then served as a long-term substitute for many years following retirement. He moved to Harrison, Arkansas in the summer of 2006 with his daughter, Gwendolyn and husband, Robbin Vance.
Houston was preceded in death by his parents, Clanton Claudius and Annie Laveda (Scoggins) Bailey; his wife, Edna Louise Pellegrin Bailey; five brothers, Bill, Marion, Joe, Cecil, and Felix Bailey; one sister, Elizabeth Bailey Davis; one grandson, Todd Anthony Pierron; and one granddaughter, Ann Pierron.
Survivors are his two daughters, Gwendolyn Bailey Vance and husband, Robbin and Lou Etta Lord Pierron and husband, Gerard; one son, Eric Stuart Lord and wife, Amy; three sisters, Maurine Bailey Foreman, Claudine Bailey Holt, and Jesse Jeannine Bailey Winfiele; two brothers, Bibb Morgan Bailey and William T. Bailey; four grandchildren, GiGi Ann Pierron, Melea Jacques, Angela Baggett, and Jared Lord; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service at 2 P.M. Saturday, January 10, 2009 at Eagle Heights Baptist Church in Harrison, Arkansas with fellowship from 1:00 P.M. until the service begins.
