Herman Dee Henderson graduated to his new home in heaven on Friday, September 17, 2021. He was born in Wayton, AR on February 18, 1932 to Reed and Elsie (Ramsey) Henderson. He grew up on the family home near Parthenon, AR and graduated from Jasper High School in 1950. Soon thereafter, he joined the US Army reaching the rank of Sergeant during the Korean War before being honorably discharged in 1953. He considered it a great honor to have served his country and to continue a tradition started by his father, who served in WWI and his brother, Hugh, who served in WWII. After coming home from the Korean War, he met and fell in love with Nina Lea Robinson, who he married on June 11, 1955. They were married for 66 years! Together, they had two sons, Steven and Nelson, who adored and respected their dad dearly.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Reed and Elsie Henderson; brothers, Hugh, Russell, VJ and Ray Henderson; and his sister, Obie Daniels.
He is survived by his wife, Nina Henderson of the home; sons, Steven and wife, Sheila of Jenks, OK, Nelson and his wife, Melba of Pocahontas, AR; and his sisters, Betty Trammell of Wichita, KS and Geraldine Snow of Edmond, OK. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Sarah Henderson-Lee of Mankato, MN, Lucas Henderson of Richmond, VA, Scott Henderson of Oklahoma City, OK, Travis Henderson of Maumelle, AR and Rachel Blackwell of Maumelle, AR, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
In 1958 Herman moved his family to Wichita, KS where he worked for Boeing for five years. In 1962, he and his family acquired and moved to the family farm near Bellefonte, AR, where he and his wife raised their two sons. Herman retired in 1994 after 27 years with Flexsteel Industries in Harrison. He was a founding member of the Harrison United Baptist Church where he served as the pastor for various periods of time between 1968 until 2004. Most recently, he actively attended the Oak Lane Freewill Baptist Church in Harrison. He was an avid reader and took his faith and commitment to Christ and the Church very seriously. He was known for his wisdom, words of encouragement and his gentle and kind spirit. He loved to hunt and was a great trainer of several hunting and farm dogs, and he loved following sports, especially basketball and baseball. He loved playing dominos and checkers with anyone who was willing and brave enough to play with him.
The funeral for Herman Dee Henderson will be on Wednesday, September 22 at 10:00 AM. at Coffman Funeral Home of Harrison, followed by burial at Eoff Cemetery, near the family farm in Bellefonte, AR. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Coffman Funeral Home of Harrison. Rev. Jerry Spurlock will be officiating the funeral service. Pallbearers will be the grandchildren and their spouses, and Derek Shriver, Herman's nephew. The family wishes to thank his many care givers and doctors who have attended to his care the last several years, especially the nurses and staff at the Maple Esplanade Assisted Living Center and the staff at Legacy Hospice. Herman will be missed by all who knew him.
