Obituary

Gladys May Novak, age 87 of Jasper, Arkansas passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 in Harrison, Arkansas.

She was born May 8, 1924 in Richmond Park, Kingston, England, the youngest of four children to Charles and Mary Ann Tanton Wallis. Her happy childhood was spent in the famous deer park where her father was gardener to royalty. She met Sgt. Glen L. Novak during World War II while he was on General Eisenhower's personal staff, residing nearby during the planning and execution of the successful campaign in Europe. They were married June 20, 1945, as the war in Europe was ending. As a G.I. bride, she traveled with many other new brides of American soldiers on a ship to her new home. She and Glen lived in San Bernardino, California until his retirement in 1965 and enjoyed her life in Jasper until her passing, often saying the Ozarks reminded her of England.

She grew up devoted to the Methodist Church in England, and to the Jasper United Methodist Church in Jasper where she served her Lord and Savior and everyone around her with Christian grace and humility. She was active until later years in the American Legion Post, serving many capacities including Chaplain.

Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Glen, in 1973; her sisters, Kathleen Mary and Florence Annie and her brother, Charles, all of England.

She is survived by daughter, Kathy Breedlove and husband, Jerry of Jasper; son, John Novak and wife, Meredith of Mountain Home; grandchildren, David Breedlove, Mark Breedlove and wife, Renee, Glen Novak and wife, Tina, Sandra Chism and husband, Darrin and John Taylor Novak; great-grandchildren, Justin, Marcus, Bryce, Breanna, Olyvia, Harlee, Ethan and Alexia.

A memorial service with Pastor Larry Acton officiating will be held Friday, March 9, 2012 at 6 p.m. at the Jasper United Methodist Church, with everyone welcome to join the family in celebrating the life of a remarkable lady. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in the Jasper Cemetery.
