Garland Lee Bryant, age 71, of Mt. Judea, Arkansas, passed away July 23, 2009 in Harrison, Arkansas. The son of R.L. Bryant and Gertie (Holt) Bryant was born June 11, 1938 in Mt. Judea, Arkansas.
Garland graduated Mt. Judea High School in 1957. He was also a 1961 graduate of Arkansas Tech University with a Bachelor's degree in Social Studies and P.E.
He served eight years in the Arkansas National Guard and was elected Justice of the Peace in Newton County.
Mr. Bryant was a teacher for many years he taught History and P.E. at Kingston High School and Jasper High School and was the Superintendent at Mt. Judea Schools.
Garland was elected to House of Representatives in 1965 and served with future Governer and U.S. Senator David Pryor. He served for 27 years as Secretary/Treasurer of Newton County Democratic Party. He served for 14 years as Newton County School Supervisor. He served for 2 years as Arkansas State Senate Sergeant at Arms. He also served 4 years on Arkansas State Committee (ASCS) to help regulate state agricultural activity, he was chosen for this service by President Clinton, David Pryor, and Dale Bumpers. He was a founding volunteer since 2004 in the Clinton Presidential Center.
Mr. Bryant was preceded in death by his father, R.L. Bryant and his brother, Gene Bryant.
Garland Lee Bryant is survived by his wife, Pam (Neill) Bryant of the home; his mother Gertie (Holt) Bryant of Mt. Judea, Arkansas; his sons, Jason Bryant of Harrison, Steven Bryant of Valley Springs, Arkansas; his daughter Jacque Bryant of Dallas, Texas; his step-sons, Chase Neill of Green Forest, Arkansas and Dr. Brian Blagg of Lawrence, Kansas; his step-daughter, Nikolette Williams of California; his brother, Murl Bryant and his wife Beverly of Mt. Judea, Arkansas; his three grandchildren Madison and Wyatt Bryant and Baily Bryant; and a host of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service was Saturday, July 25, 2009 in the gymnasium at Mt. Judea School. Visitation was, Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Coffman Funeral Home in Jasper. Devoe Campbell, Tommy Fludd and Brian Blagg PhD. officiated. Burial followed in Mt. Judea Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jason Bryant, Steven Bryant, Chase Neill, Brian Blagg, Murl Bryant, and Jhone Mateo. Honorary pallbearer was Senator Randy Laverty.
