Words from Dylan's Grandmother:
His name was Dylan Schnidt, and he was my grandson that I raised since he was 2 years old. He was my baby, my golden boy, my son my grandson. He was not a "jumper". He was a bright and beautiful soul who was struggling with mental problems. My hope is that mental health won't be a secret. That more help will be made available to people struggling with mental health and that they won't be ashamed to ask for help. I don't want Dylan to be remembered as the boy who jumped. I want him to be remembered as the bright, funny, loving boy that he was and the boy who opened up the eyes of this town that mental health is real and it is brutal and it can happen to anybody. Don't keep it a secret if you are struggling. Get help.
Parents get in your children's head and make sure they are OK and if you have any doubt get them help. Don't be ashamed and don't wait. I hope Dylans death will not be in vain. I hope it will be a wakeup call to everybody reading this when you are posting about "jumpers" you are talking about somebody's loved one who just ended their life and to have more compassion and love for other human beings. More training for police and paramedics for mental health. Society has made us afraid to stop and help someone who is sitting on a bridge. I hope this loss changes that and opens up the conversation about mental health in our community. His name was Dylan Schnidt.
