Doris Bishop of Springdale, Arkansas, formerly of Harrison, passed away peacefully from natural causes on July 15, 2026, at the age of 92.

Born Doris Mae Clark on September 14, 1933, she grew up just outside Kingston, Arkansas, alongside her beloved sister, Joyce. Doris graduated as valedictorian of Kingston High School at the age of 16 before moving to Harrison to begin her career. After a brief time in Little Rock working in banking, she met the love of her life, Duane Elza Bishop. They married in 1954 and began a partnership that would shape the rest of her life.

Doris and Duane lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, and St. Louis, Missouri, before returning to Harrison to raise their family. Once back in Boone County, Doris developed a passion for public service. She managed the Boone County headquarters for all three gubernatorial campaigns of Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and, in 1970, became the first woman appointed to the Boone County Hospital Board of Trustees (now North Arkansas Regional Medical Center), where she served for seven years.

During that time, she also began working with the Boone County Juvenile Services Office and was appointed Juvenile Probation Officer. It was there that she met Fran Lair, who became her closest friend and remained one of the great blessings of her life.

After Duane's death in 1981, Doris demonstrated the resilience that would define her life. She spent several years as a sportswriter for the Harrison Daily Times before joining a dedicated group of local government officials, law enforcement officers, attorneys, and community leaders to establish Sanctuary, a shelter for victims of domestic violence. As its founding director, Doris found the work that became her life's calling.

Working alongside Karen Gardner, she helped develop the facility, secured grants to fund its operation, and built an organization dedicated to protecting those who had nowhere else to turn. She became a tireless advocate for victims and a relentless—more accurately, ferocious—opponent of domestic violence and abuse. She said that sitting on the witness stand and looking abusers in the eye while testifying against them was one of the most gratifying experiences of her life. Sanctuary continues to serve families today and is widely regarded within the shelter community as a model of compassionate and effective service and is a lasting legacy of Doris's vision, determination, and courage.

Although she was proud of her many accomplishments, Doris devoted herself even more fully to the people she loved. Family was never defined by branches on a family tree. Her sons, nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-nieces, great-nephews, and all the children who came after were simply hers. In later years, she laughed (though she was only half joking) that she at times could no longer remember who belonged to her and who belonged to Joyce and Ruby (Duane’s sister). To Doris, it simply didn't matter. Everyone was family. Everyone belonged, everyone was important, and everyone had a place. She invested deeply in each person, celebrated their successes, carried their burdens, and loved them with a generosity that extended far beyond obligation. If you were part of her family, even by marriage, friendship, or simply because she had decided you belonged, you knew you were loved.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Duane Bishop; her parents, Dewey Clark and Mildred Spencer Clark; her sister, Joyce Clark Drewry, and brother-in-law, Roy Drewry; her sister-in-law, Ruby Langley, and brother-in-law, James Langley; and her great-granddaughter, Brooke Bishop.

She is survived by her sons, John Bishop, Ralph Bishop, Alan Bishop (Jill), and Chad Bishop (Shelly); her nephews, James Langley (Anna), Steve Drewry (Klara), and Mike Drewry; her nieces, Marilyn Drewry, and Beth Fess (Tim); her grandchildren, Matt, Donn, Brant, Jack, Cole, and Emma Kate; along with 10 great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were enriched by her love.

Those who knew Doris will remember her sharp wit, fearless spirit, unwavering sense of justice, and fierce loyalty to the people she loved. They will also remember her refreshingly candid perspective. She never softened the truth to make it more comfortable, but those who knew her best understood that her honesty always came from a place of love and conviction. She believed that doing the right thing was worth the cost, that those without a voice deserved someone willing to stand beside them, and that family was something to be nurtured every day.

Her courage, compassion, and unwavering commitment to others will continue to live on in all who were fortunate enough to know her. If love is measured by the lives it touches, she lived an extraordinary life.

The world is a little less fearless today, but far better because Doris Bishop was in it.

The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the residents, caregivers, staff, and entire support team at The Maples at Har-Ber Meadows in Springdale. Their kindness, compassion, and genuine love brought comfort and joy to Doris during her final years. She cherished the friendships she made there and was deeply grateful to be surrounded by people who cared for her with such dignity and respect.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 1, at 12:00 p.m., followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m., at Coffman Funeral Home in Harrison, Arkansas.
