Donald Eugene "Gene" Hensley, age 81, of Western Grove, Arkansas, passed away at home on July 28, 2025.
The son of William Wade Hensley and Lula Mae (Arnold) Hensley was born in Providence, Rhode Island on February 25, 1944.
Donald was a highly decorated veteran, retiring at the rank of Staff Sergeant from the US Army October 31, 1983. He enlisted October 15, 1963 and was assigned to C Company 1st Battalion 32nd Division as an Armor Crewman. While he was assigned to Troop A 3rd Division Squadron 12th Calvary he fought in the Vietnam War and received a Purple Heart for wounds received in action on August 22, 1967. He also received A Bronze Star Medal for his outstanding meritorious service in connection with military operations against Vietnam during the period of June 15, 1967 to April 10, 1968.
He served multiple tours in Vietnam, including Counteroffensive Phase II, Counteroffensive Phase III, TET Counteroffensive and Counteroffensive Phase IV. His other awards and medals included National Defense Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, Overseas Service Ribbon (2), Valorous Unit Award, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, Republic Vietnam Civil Actions Medal, Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze stars, a 2nd and 3rd Award of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, NCO Professional Development Ribbon (3) and Expert Badge M16 Rifle. He served 5 years and 7 months as Armor Crewman and an additional 5 years and 7 months as a Calvary Scout.
Donald's final military achievement was receiving a Meritorious Service Medal for his outstanding service from November 1, 1973 to October 31, 1983. During his final assignment, he was stationed in Germany and the US as Training Noncommissioned Officer, 1st Squadron, 4th Calvary, 1st Infantry Division (Mech). During this time, his efforts of expert leadership and devotion to duty contributed to the success of each unit he served.
Donald's devotion to the US Army and his Country, were admirable and respected. He was a true patriot and was very proud of his military service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Nancy Hensley, his siblings, Rick Wade Hensley, Charles Wayne Hensley, and Rex Arnold Hensley.
Donald is survived by his daughter, Donna Hensley of Offenbach, Germany; a sister, Linda Lou Horn; and a host of nieces and nephews.
A private burial was held at Maple Leaf Cemetery on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.
