Obituary

Don Ray Mathis, of Harrison, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 24, 2026. He was 85 years old.

The son of Paul and Wahlelle (Horton) Mathis was born on April 27, 1941 in Snowball, Arkansas.

One of Papa Don’s, aka the Candyman, greatest joys in life was supporting his family. For many years, he could be found in the stands cheering on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren at countless basketball games, cheer halftimes, soccer matches, tennis tournaments, T-ball and softball games, dance recitals, pageants, and piano recitals. No matter the event, he was there, sharing in their accomplishments, and making memories that will last a lifetime.

He loved the sunshine and never met a crappie he didn’t want to catch and bring home for a fish fry. Some of his happiest days were spent on the water, fishing with family and friends or at home watching NASCAR on Sundays. He also cherished his years riding his Gold Wing and the many camping adventures he shared with Granny. Whether traveling the open road to Texas, delivering cars with his buddies or spending time with those he loved most, he embraced life with a grateful heart and a genuine love for family.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife, of 66 years, Cozette Mathis; two daughters, Angela (Gordon) Padfield and Anita (Raymond) Pruitt; two granddaughters, Amanda (Lance) Woodworth and Andrea (James) Westfall; four great granddaughters, Kylie and Kinsley Woodworth and Rylee and Remi Westfall; one sister, Bennie Jean (Bob) McEntire; and a host of other family and friends.

A memorial visitation will be at 10:00 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM both on Friday, June 26, 2026 at Coffman Funeral Home of Harrison.  Pastor Russell Essary will officiate.  Honorary pallbearers include Lance Woodworth, Gordon Padfield, James Westfall, Jim Scroggins, Raymond Pruitt, Bob Cash, Bob Watts, Bill Sansing, and Gerry Sansing.
