Obituary

Alton Lee Campbell, age 85, of Jasper, passed away with his wife and family by his side on Saturday, February 22, 2025.  Alton was born in Mt. Judea, Arkansas June 29, 1939, to Kingston and Juanita (Nichols) Campbell.  He and Verdell Smith married on June 21, 1958, and enjoyed 66 years of marriage.  Together they attended the Jasper Church of Christ.

Alton grew up on a farm near Mt. Judea and graduated from Mt. Judea High School.  Alton and Verdell moved to Kansas City, Missouri for a short period of time before returning to make their home in Newton County.  Alton, along with his father, owned the Jasper Citgo service station.  After his father's passing, Alton continued to own the service station.  During this time Alton also served on the Jasper School Board.

Alton was elected as Newton County Judge in 1978 and proudly served for ten years - a job he very much enjoyed and took great pride in.  He had great respect for the citizens of Newton County and worked to treat every person fairly.  Under his leadership, Newton County was one of the first in the state to establish a sanitation department in which many other counties in Arkansas sought information on how to establish the service in their respective county.  In later years, Alton and Verdell were co-owners of the Jasper Farm Supply until their retirement.

In retirement, Alton continued to raise cattle for many years along with raising a vegetable garden in which he took great pride in and would proudly boast about to his family.  He always had enough harvest to share with his family, friends and others.  He was a devoted husband to Verdell, a wonderful and loving dad to his four children - Theresa, Randy, Kim and Darren - and an amazing Pa to his six grandkids.  All shared a special relationship with him.

Alton was preceded in death by his parents, Kingston Campbell and Juanita Nichols Campbell Bohannon, his son Randall (Randy) Campbell, his in-laws Columbus and Lucille Norton Smith, his brother Rabon Campbell, his brother-in-law Glen Smith and his step-father Kenneth Bohannon.

He is survived by his wife, Verdell Campbell; son, Darren Campbell of Jasper; daughters, Kimberly Dye and husband Sam of Mt. Judea and Theresa Ewing and husband Lonnie of Fayetteville; daughter-in-law, Sherri Campbell of Harrison; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Kristen Hampton (Peyton, Paxton and Parker); Clarissa Mangrum and husband Bobby (Lily, Logan and Lydia); Allison Ewing; Dylan Dye and wife Cheyenna (Canyon, Kinsley and Kingston); Cody Campbell; and Alex Dye and wife Ashley (Baby Dye due in July).

He is also survived by sisters-in-law, Vivian Smith of Vendor and Marilyn Campbell of Springfield, Missouri as well as four nieces and nephews and their families: Gary Smith and wife Shelly, Kellie Davis and husband Ricky, Stacey Witty and husband Stephen and Michael Campbell, and many extended relatives and friends.
