Obituary

Alta Lea (Hefley) Hampton, of Lurton, Arkansas, was born October 9, 1929 at Round Rock Community in Pope County, Arkansas to Rev. Daniel and Ollie (Freeman) Hefley, the youngest of nine children. As was her prayer, she went to sleep down here and woke up in Glory on April 19, 2021 in Russellville, Arkansas.

She was married to the love of her life, Herbert Hampton, on June 6, 1948 and enjoyed married bliss for over 50 years. Alta at 12 years of age committed her life to Jesus. She, along with her sister, Lillie, accompanied their dad, "Uncle Dan" to revival and brush arbor meetings throughout Newton and surrounding counties, singing and playing the guitar. Meetings usually lasted three to six weeks at a time, with hundreds giving their hearts to the Lord.  They often walked, rode a horse, or hitched a ride with the mail truck to get to revival. It was at one of these meetings that her future husband, Herbert, saw her through a window, playing the guitar, and announced to his friends, "She's mine"!

Alta was a charter member of the Lurton Assembly for over 77 years. She and her husband and family traveled nationwide singing gospel music for many years as the "Hampton Family". Her alto voice never faltered in singing harmonies with the family. Today she sings in Heaven's Choir with greater clarity than she's ever had.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Robert, Berry, Devoe, and Wilburn Hefley; three sisters, Bertha, Hettie, and Elsie; her husband, Herbert Hampton; and two grandchildren, Bridget Robinson and Noah Hampton.

Survivors include her sister, Lillie Vanderpool, of Jasper; three children, Thelma (Stan) Taylor, Donnie (Rebeccah) Hampton, and Donna (Larry) Ochs, all of Lurton; nine grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her sweet smile and encouraging words.

Visitation will be at 11:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 12:00 Noon both on Saturday, April 24, 2021 at the Lurton Assembly of God Church. Pastor Stan Taylor will officiate. Interment will be in Tarlton Cemetery. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Shawn and Ryan Taylor, Jesse Hampton, Justin Campbell, Chad Love, and Jeremy Robinson, nephew Joe Vanderpool and great great nephew Ethan Hefley. Honorary pallbearers are nephews, John Vanderpool, Harold, Robert, and David Hefley, Roy and Bill Hicks, and Doyle and Teddy Tennison.
